What If I Have No Marketing Bone in My Body?

What if I have no marketing bone in my body?

Let me guess – You’re sitting there thinking I’m good at what I do and I want to be successful, but I have no marketing bone in my body. Or maybe you’re thinking I know how to do my job really well, but I don’t know how to market myself or my services.

What should I do? Well sit back and relax because I have just the thing for you!

Join me today as I talk about how to market yourself without being pushy, without seeming like a snake-oil salesman, and everything in between...👊

Dating is A lot Like Marketing

What helps people, helps business.” - Leo Burnett

Dating is A LOT like marketing. I'm serious.  Think about it. You're trying to sell yourself, so you can get a date (or a relationship). And that's just one of many parallels between dating and marketing. Let's take a look at some of them:

The Purpose of Both Is to Find Someone Who Has Similar Interests, Values and Goals as You Do:

The purpose of both dating and marketing is to find someone who has similar interests, values and goals as you do.

You want a date (or relationship) that will last. You want to market your business so it can last too.

In both cases, you're looking for a long-term partner, not just a quick fix or temporary solution. And there's nothing wrong with that!

The Right Partner Can Make You Happier Than Any Amount of Money Ever Could:

The right partner can make you happier than any amount of money ever could.  It's true! When you're with someone who cares about you, and when that person cares about your well-being, it feels amazing. It's like a warm blanket on a cold day; it makes everything better.

Marketing can also make you happier than any amount of money ever could.

So, let me break it down for you in dating terms below:

Looking Your Best

Just like when you're attempting to date someone, you want to put on your very best!

In terms of marketing, you should have your best looking website on.

  • Make sure it is clean and free from errors.

  • Make sure all your social media pages are up-to-date and professional looking.

  • You don't need a fancy design for everything but if you can do that then go for it!

  • You also want to make sure that everything is mobile friendly because people are browsing from their phones more than ever before so if they can't see or read what's on your page then they will click away fast.

First Impressions:

Your first impression is one of your most important ones! When you meet someone new, how long does it take them to get a sense of who you are? Most likely not long at all.

They'll probably be able to tell what kind of person you are within seconds based on several factors such as how well groomed you look (do you smell good?), how friendly/warm/approachable/confident etc. you are and if they can read something on your shirt or jacket.

The same goes for marketing, people will form an opinion about you quickly so make sure it's a good one!

The Attention Grabber:

You have about 10-20 seconds to grab someone's attention before they click away from your page.

You want to make sure that whatever their eyes land on first is something that will peak their interest and keep them reading further down into your content.

These few points above are vital to your sole purpose in marketing...but we'll get to that later. For now, let's address the next reason why marketing is a lot like dating.

Warm Referral In- Affiliates

When you have a friend who knows the person you're trying to land a date with, do you ask them to introduce you, or do you do it yourself? Most likely, you'll get that friend to do it.

That's what we like to call the warm referral in. Your affiliates are very much like that friend who introduces you to your crush.

They know and trust you, so when they send their audience over to you, they will be warmly received. You should treat them well and make sure they feel appreciated for all their hard work!

Opt-In & Allow Them to NEVER Hit Unsubscribe

Once you get past the introduction, you're going to want to ask them out on a date. In marketing, this is what we refer to as an Opt-In. When you're dating, it's inevitable that you're searching for the "one."

That said, you want to reel them in and allow them to never hit subscribe when it comes to potential customers on your email list.  The key here is to be strategic with how you present your content. You don't want to come off too strong or pushy.

Remember, they're coming back because they like you...at least at first! So how do you entice them into giving up their information? Well, keep reading and find out!

Offer Value: Do They Like What They See?

To entice them to give up their names, phone numbers, and email addresses, you're going to want to give them an offer they can't refuse. This is where you add value.

Do they like what they see? Is there something that would make it worth their while to sign up for your mailing list? If not, take a step back and think about how you can add more value. Make it worth their while.

Give them a reason why they should sign up for your mailing list so that when it comes time for your launch, they’ll be ready to buy! If they like what they see, it's on to the next step in building the perfect email list....

Take a Chance on Learning About Them, While They Discover You

When it comes to building an email list ( a good one), they've already chosen to opt-in, go out with you, and just like dating, your customer is in awe of you over the value they are seeing within your website.

So, what's next?

Well, if you want them to know you're interested in them for more than just a one time date, the next step during the courtship would be to get to know them. In the marketing world, we can learn about our customers through surveys and quizzes. This really adds to value.

It lets them know you're still interested, and gives them the chance to keep discovering more about your brand. You have something to offer them that will make their life easier or better, so let them discover all that you have to offer!

Most of the time, when dating, you need to not only tell them what you have to offer, but show them. Which brings us to the next step..

Get Them to Take a Chance with a Free Trial

Just like popping the question when it comes to marriage, you are getting your potential customers to take a chance on you. What better way to get that chance than by offering them a free trial or sample of your product?

In fact, you add quality to your brand, product, or service when you attach "free" to it.

For example, if you’re selling an online course about dog training and offer a free video series about housebreaking puppies, people will be more likely to try out your training course because they can see how well-versed you are in dog training.

They’ll also be more likely to purchase from you because they have already taken a chance with their time and watched part of your video series for free.

“A small list that wants exactly what you're offering is better than a bigger list that isn't committed.” - Ramsay Leimenstoll
